Genre

My genre is fliers. Usually fliers are posted on bulletin boards, or passed out in heavily trafficked areas, as to get the most people as possible to see them. They usually have a catchy word or phrase in big type as to grab your attention, and pull you into reading the rest. Usually organizations use this genre to spread information about different things such as upcoming events. Within this genre I feel that I have limited freedom. With fliers they can only be posted or handed out so people can choose not to read or take them. My sources for this information were mostly my personal knowledge of fliers.

My project idea is to bring more fans to the soccer games. This year both the football and soccer teams are having mediocre seasons, yet the football stands are full for every game. I plan to attract more fans to the games by posting flyers for the games, and creating incentive for students to attend games, such as give-a-ways, which the team already does for some games.

I think this week in class I improved upon almost all of my work in the previous weeks, I tried to participate more in class and group discussions, and I kept up with all of my reading and writing assignments. I still have to work on keeping up with my blog which I continue to have trouble with. I will continue to try and improve upon this over the next few weeks.

Good Essays

A good essay includes several different things. One of these things is that the essay is not just steps towards a conclusion, but that it helps you realize new things that you didn't know before. It should be a hunt for new ideas. Though an essay may include facts it is not centered around them, it is a creative opinion of the author. It is a reflection on the facts, not an analysis of them. Essays must tell the truth. In order for my essay to be a good essay it needs to include more reflection and insight on the topic.

Essays

I think that these are all essays because of the way that the authors because they are literary pieces that are true that include opinions, observations, and reflections by the authors. I actually enjoyed all three, they caught my interest and retained for the length of time i spent reading them. In The Stunt Pilot the author talks about how she in enthralled by the performance the stunt pilot puts on. In Ali in Havana the author talks about the general attitude towards smoking in Cuba, and how the most popular American periodical is Cigar Aficionado. In Silent Dancing the author reflects on her early experiences living in the U.S. and how she got her first spanking there for banging on the noisy pipes in the family's apartment. The fact that the story is true, and that the authors are able to put their own spin on it and be creative is what i believe makes all of these essays.

Literature Review

The Virginia Tech Men’s Soccer Team (Hokies) has become a diverse group of players from across the United States and a few other countries. This has been due to the recruiting of German-native coach, Oliver Weiss, over the past several years.

Oliver Weiss has been coaching here for seven years, and over the course of those years, he has created an extremely diverse squad with players from all over the United States, several players each from Germany, and Ghana, and one from Canada. This past year this diversity helped the Hokies reach the semifinals and achieve the greatest season the program has seen. (Kilgore 2007) A huge contributor to this accomplishment was Patrick Nyarko, a player that Weiss recruited from Ghana. After the season ended, he was drafted into the MLS. Last year four players came from overseas to play here at Virginia Tech for only one season. Their presence also helped to contribute to the Hokies amazing season. This year there are twelve new recruits, and five of them are international. However, the foreigners presence has not led to as great of a start as it did last year, which is illustrated by the Hokies’ current record of 2-5-1. Hopefully as this year goes on the foreigners will be able to contribute as well as they did last year. Off the field the foreigners can have a positive effect as well. The players from the U.S. can learn a lot from being around players with different cultures, and playing styles. Last year that was the case, according to Kilgore (2007).

The diversity of the squad in past years has been very beneficial to the team both on and off the field. Hopefully it will have the same positive effects in years to come.

So last night I interviewed three members of the soccer team, and today I attended one of their practices. When I showed up the house I planned on interviewing one member of the team but they were all sitting in the room and they just started to shout out answers. This was good because I got three similar perspectives, with slight variations. The basic theme of everything they had to say was that last year was a great year for the team in terms of success on the field and team relationships off the field. This year is different because the team lost a lot of players and got a lot of new players many of which are from other countries. The team chemistry and closeness between players is not there like it was last year. Injuries have also hurt the team team this year. At the practice i observed today the team looked very good but appeances can be deceiving so i guess well see at the next game.
